The film takes place in Los Angeles and follows a variety of different characters, primarily Reed Bennett (Ashton Kutcher), a happy-go-lucky florist who has just proposed to his fiancée, Morley (Jessica Alba). Friends and coworkers are surprised when he announces their engagement, assuming that she would have turned them down. But later that day, Morley begins to have doubts.Meanwhile, Reed’s best friend Julia (Jennifer Garner) has finally fallen in love. Harrison (Patrick Dempsey) is the perfect man: he’s sweet, sensitive, romantic, and a doctor! But there’s one thing she doesn’t know about her new boy toy—he’s married! Not divorced or separated like he led her to believe. And it’s Reed’s job to help her see the truth.
